Bartow, Fla. (April 28, 2026) – The Polk County Board of County Commissioners approved a pilot project to establish the Northeast Landfill Customer Convenience Center and adopted a resolution setting disposal rates for the temporary drop-off facility at the April 21 board meeting.
The project, designed to help reduce illegal dumping in Polk County’s northeast region, will provide a convenient location for residents to dispose of household, yard and bulk waste, as well as residential construction debris, tires and scrap metal. Solid Waste staff will use the existing Northeast Landfill site, located at 4001 Bannon Island Road in Haines City, for the convenient drop-off location for residential waste. No landfilling will occur onsite.
“We’re aware that illegal dumping in the Poinciana and Haines City areas has been a problem. With this pilot program, we’re hoping to put a stop to items being dumped along the side of the road,” said Commission Chair Martha Santiago.
The site is not yet ready to open. Residents should not attempt to use the site until the official opening date of June 1.
“We want residents to know that we’re working to make visiting the site an efficient and convenient experience,” said Solid Waste Director Brian Cogswell.
Disposal fees will be based on vehicle type:
- Cars, SUVs and pickup trucks: $10
- Vehicles with utility or enclosed trailers less than 6 feet: $18
- Vehicles with utility or enclosed trailers 6 to 16 feet: $27
- Tires: $5 each
Residents must provide proof of Polk County residency. No cash will be accepted. Tap to Pay, Apple pay, debit and credit cards will be accepted. Commercial use of the facility will not be allowed, including automated dump trailers.
Once the facility opens on June 1, the planned hours of operations are as follows:
- Monday through Friday: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Saturday: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
